circulation

To design a vertical circulation to lead people into and across the historical building in order to explore it bits by bits. The design first introduces the visitors to a dark willow panels “tunnel” staircase which brings the visitors to the first floor, which is the base of the atrium. The tunnel then swirls into the balustrade of the other flight of staircases and then further narrow down to the handrails of the rest of the staircases and railings. The design is inspired by the formation of the wicker basket, the willow used in the design intended to “wrap up” the building, implanting a new feeling to the steel structured building. The idea of using wood as the main material of the design emphasis on the original materials of the building which create a light, chilling atmosphere. Circulation located in the atrium of the building to be the main attraction of the restoration. Visitors will enjoy the shower of light from the transparent roof while ascending the building.

Airbnb

To create a contrast with the organic staircases which lead the guests up to the Airbnb. The whole design is based on geometric shapes. The main idea behind each of the angles is to bring natural light into the rooms and also guide people into their own place. The faceted steel façade further continues the existing building enhances the contrast between the old building and the new extension with the same structure under the skin. There are five rooms with a single floor wheelchair accessible room. The south facing external terrace functions as a gathering place for the guests from different backgrounds to enjoy Belfast’s landscape along the River Lagan.  The colourful metal panels spread across the corridor up to the external terrace creating a delightful atmosphere for the guests who just came back for a long day visit.
